More mundane question: any other organic way to deal with aphids other than hand? My poor potted bamboo is covered with aphids and crying for help. I tried hard spray with water, and also spritzing mild soap but that is not working.

to Chris,
Lay the bamboo pot down somewhere away from the lawn and other plants. Give it a good wash with mild sprinkling to get rid of the aphids thoroughly.
After that you have to terminate the aphids with shoes on or gloves on. Otherwise they'll go to grass or other plants which makes your headache even worse.
