十二月卅一日 星期一 晨霜後晴
早上, 我開雞門, 抱蛋雞等不及的出來吃草.
The sitting hen had hardly waited to dash to the grass when I opened the gate in the morning.
牠抱蛋已超過三星期, 小雞仍無蹤影.
She has been sitting for over three weeks already. No chicks came out still.
趁牠不在, 我們將蛋拿去檢視.
We checked her egg while she was not in.
果真如所料, 蛋內漆黑一片, 看不出有一點小雞的樣子.
Same as we thought, inside is all black. There is nothing looked like a chick in the shell.
不知牠要抱到何時才肯放棄?
I don't know when will she give it up?
雞吃草.

十二月卅日 星期日 夜雨晨陰轉晴多雲
小羊離開農場,
Right after baby goats left the farm,
公羊馬上來找母羊.
Billy goats chased Nanny goats for matching.
追趕跑跳碰......
Racing, chasing, running, jumping, banging,.......
農家食譜----柿子糊
Farmer's simple food----Persimmon smoothie
材料--軟熟柿子八到十個.
8 to 10 very soft, very ripe persimmons.
做法--清洗柿子, 去子去蒂, 切半.
Persimmons washed clean, seeded and pedicled, cut in half.
放入攪拌機, 低速約十秒鐘, 攪碎呈糊狀.
Place persimmon halves in blender, low speed about 10 seconds to mush.
倒柿泥進小鍋, 小火煮滾.
In a small pot, simmer the mush till just boiled.
熄火.
Heat off.
立即食用.
Serve it warm.
或食前蓋保鮮膜, 微波爐高溫熱十秒.
Or cover with clear wrap, microwave high heat about 10 seconds befor serve.

水公司要我們農家檢查水井.
Water company asked us to check the farm wells.
報告指出, 缺水危及香魚絕滅.
Report said that the smelt will endanger for lack of water.
為了保護香魚,明年開始將限量供應灌溉水.
The irrigation water will be supplied so limited as to protect the smelt next year.
我們農家遭受池魚之殃.
Like the pond fish are suffering from the fire, we farmers are suffering from the smelt.
井本是農地必備.
Well is basically essential to the farm land.
本地農業區幾乎多有灌溉水通過,
The irrigation water runs through most of the local agricultural area,
水井便可有可無.
which makes farm wells unnecessary at all.
因應明年的新措施,
For next year's new rule,
探井又熱門起來.
well drilling is doing good business once again.

冬天來臨了.
Winter has come.
正如媽媽常說, "冬至前後, 斜水不流."
Like Mom always said, " Around winter solstice, tilt water won't flow."
到處水面結一層薄冰.
There were broken pieces of thin ice on the water serface everywhere.
鳥雀棲在太陽下取暖.
Birds perched to keep warm in the sun.
冷風颼颼吹,
A great rush of cold wind,
虛有冬陽.
winter sun really means nothing.
耕犁機上二黃雀.
Yellow birds on rotertiller.

十二月廿七日 星期四 晨霜後晴
一個小動物園買去我們所有的小羊.
A patting zoo bought all of our baby goats.
老闆說他自己開車來取小羊.
The owner said he would drive up here for them.
大清早, 農夫把小羊集中在車庫.
Early morning, Nong-fu gathered the baby goats in garage.
老闆一到, 就開始移送小羊到車上.
The owner had just arrived, Nong-fu started to move the baby goats.
"小羊, 乖乖!" 農夫一面和小羊說話, 一面把小羊抬上了車.
"Come on, baby." Nong-fu talked to them while he carried them to the van.
小羊即將開始過另一種生活.
The baby goats were living a new life from now on.
我很想念牠們.
I sure miss them very much.

早早晚晚, 不時有飛機飛過頭頂.
Day and night, there are aircraft cluttering over the farm all the times.
航空公司班機, 私人小飛機, 滑翔機, 直升機.....,
Airliners, private aircraft, gliders, helicopters.......,
盡量飛低.
as low as they can be.
他們想看看我們,
They like to see us closely,
我們也想看看不同的飛機.
and we like to see all kinds of aircraft as well.
飛機牽引滑翔機.

農夫載小朋友去小動物園區.
Nong-fu took children to the patting zoo.
小動物園區有迷你馬, 小羊, 小豬, 迷你驢.
There are two ponies, one baby goat, pigs, and one mini donkey in the zoo.
小朋友拿草餵小動物, 輕拍小動物.
Children fed small animals hays, and patted them gently.
小動物也喜歡被愛.
Small animals enjoy to be loved, too.
農家食譜----迷你三明治
Farmer's simple food----Mini sandwitches
材料--新鮮麵包. 任何三明治肉片.
Fresh bread. Any kind of sandwitch meat.
做法--麵包切去邊皮.
Cut bread 4 edges off.
放上肉片.
One slice of meat on bread.
小心捲起.
Roll it up carefully.
切兩半.
Cut it into two.
小曳引機拖小拖車去小動物園區.
Children in weagon, towed by a small tractor, to the patting zoo.

早上, 喜見雪雁嘎嘎叫著飛回來了.
What a pleasant surprise to see the snow goose flew quaking all the way back in the morning.
但不想再驚擾牠.
I left her alone.
前陣子, 牠都待在隔鄰的池塘.
She had been in neighbor's pond lately.
大門口與鄰居閒聊,
I chatted with my neighbor at the gate,
我說, "雪雁飛來了."
I said, "Snow goose's here."
她說, "羅斯雁飛來了."
She said, "Ross goose's here."
我們說的可是同一隻鳥?
Were we talking about the same bird?
我說, "此地少見雪雁."
Then I said, "It's rare to see a snow goose here."
她又說, "少見羅斯雁."
Again, she said, "Yah, it's rare to see a ross goose."
想起來, 雪雁亦名羅斯雁.
I remembered that snow goose also name ross goose indeed.
我們都上網去查過, 看的是同樣的資料,
Both of us checked on line, read the same information,
選用的名字卻各不相同.
but chose totally different names.
羅斯也是加州一個富裕小鎮名.
By the way. Ross is also a small rich town in California.

清晨七點我們到達舊金山.
We were in San Francisco 7 o'clock in the morning.
旭日待昇, 雲霞炫麗.
The sun was about to rise.
Gorgeous clouds shone up in the air.
城市漸漸甦醒,
City was waking up,
一株艷紅大樹耀眼奪目.
one very red Christmas tree caught my eyes completely.
農家食譜----燻肉鮭魚
Farmer's simple food----Salmon with bacon
材料--鮭魚肉一塊. 燻肉數條.
Salmon fillet, Bacon strips.
做法--燻肉略切去肥油.
Roughly trim bacon strips fat off.
瘦肉一條一條裹住鮭魚.
Well wrap salmon fillet with trimmed bacon strips.
小心移放鮭魚入鍋.
Move salmon in pan carefully.
乾鍋小火慢煎至瘦燻肉微焦. 約五分鐘
No cooking oil is needed.
Saute with low heat till bacon strips slightly burned.
翻面再稍煎至燻肉微黃.
Turn it over. Saute the other side to little yellowish.
熄火. 蓋鍋蓋約三十秒.
Heat off. Cover the lid for about 30 seconds.

農家食譜----蜜汁烤火腿
Farmer's simple food
材料--洋火腿一個, 半生熟. 蜂蜜一杯.
One half cooked ham. One cup of honey.
做法--洋火腿除去包裝紙. 置烤盤上. 塗抹蜂蜜.
Method--Remove plastic package from ham. Put ham in oven pan.
塗抹蜂蜜.
Rub honey on ham.
鋁箔包緊火腿與烤盤.
Aluminum foil cover ham and pan.
烤箱預熱325度F.
Preheat oven 325F.
一切按火腿包裝紙上說明.
Follow instruiction on ham package.

越來越感覺山腳下節慶的氣氛.
I can feel that holiday season is getting closer to the foothill.
我們不過聖誕.
We don't celebrate Christmas.
可是我實在喜歡冬季開放的聖誕紅,
But I do like those poinsettias blooming in winter,
也挺喜歡金金銀銀紅紅綠綠的節日裝飾.
and the gold, silver, red, green holiday decorations as well.

藤上的番茄常被糟蹋.
The tomatoes on the vines were spoiled often and often.
真可惜!
What a waste!
原來是老母雞逛番茄田;
So it was the old hen visited the tomato field,
一路走, 一路嘗.
who tasted tomatoes while walking along the field.
這個太甜, 那個太酸......
This one's too sweet, that one's too sour....
一地的爛番茄.
Here were bad tomatoes all over.

農家食譜----番茄湯
Farmer's simple food----Tomato soup
材料--番茄數個, 切大塊或小塊.
A couple of large tomatoes, chunked or diced.
洋菇幾朵, 切片或切丁.
Mushrooms, sliced or diced.
紅蘿蔔綠菜花, 切大或小塊, 隨意.
carrots and broccolis, in large or small chunk, optional.
高湯, 隨意.
chicken broth, optional.
做法--鍋內水或高湯蓋過番茄. 大火煮滾, 轉小火, 至皮分開.
Method--Water or chicken broth cover tomatoes, bring to boil.
Simmer till peels off.
加入紅蘿蔔塊, 小火煮約五至十分鐘.
Add carrots, simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
加洋菇與綠菜花煮滾約一分鐘. 綠菜花變色前熄火.
Add mushrooms and broccolis,
simmer about 1 minute.
Turn off heat before broccolis fade.
加鹽或不加鹽皆可.
Salt or unsalt, optional.
趁熱進食, 提神又癒寒.
Take it hot to warm up the spirits and get over the cold.

It showered in the morning.
氣溫又掉好幾度.
The temperature has dropped again.
冬天已經來臨.
Winter is here.
雖說加州冬天並不怎麼冷,
Though winter will never be severely cold in California,
到底是冬季.
it's winter time after all.
樹葉凋零.
Leaves swirled back to ground.
還有不怕冷的花朵鑽出頭來.
Some floweres still came out of the coldness.
草中一朵菇.

山腳下, 工人在田中忙採收.
The workers were busy picking and packing in the field at foothills.
今年最晚一次收穫.
It was the latest harvest in the year.
寒冬降臨前, 青椒紅椒芹菜, 通通採下來.
All of the green pepers, red pepers and celeries were picked before it became freezing.
拖車趕來運貨, 送去市場.
The trailer rushed to the market.
市場上, 滿眼大農產品, 進口產品.
The market is filled with produces from enterprises and import as well.
小農勉力維持.
Small farms are struggling.
生活就是堅強不息.
Life is tough.

很久沒在雞舍撿到雞蛋了.
I have not collected any eggs in the chicken coop for quite a long while.
是雞太老不再生蛋?
Were the ladies too old to lay eggs no more,
還是天氣太冷暫停生蛋?
or was it too cold to lay eggs just for now?
清晨我去前次撿到雞蛋的草地上搜巡.
Early morning, I went searching in the grass where I picked up an egg few days ago.
果然找到一堆雞蛋和一隻母雞在抱蛋.
I found a hen sitting there seriously with couple eggs around at last.
我伸手撿拾牠身邊的蛋, 驚擾了牠.
She was terribly disturbed when I got those eggs.
又是一隻母雞抱蛋.
Here came one more sitting hen.
自從大公雞走了之後, 目前我們僅剩烏骨公雞一隻.
Ever since the big rooster has gone, we got only one rooster left right now.
不知這母雞結婚了沒?
I don't know if this lady married or not?
棄蛋. Rejected eggs.

一個鄰居要買兩隻小羊.
One neighbor bought two baby goats from us.
一隻黑, 一隻灰.
One black, one gray.
我們一人抱一隻小羊去她馬房.
Each of us carried one baby goat to her stable.
她是養馬人, 專替人照顧馬.
She is a horsewoman, who takes care of horses for other people.
她的農場有許多馬.
There are many horses on her farm.
此外, 她還養了兩隻驢子, 一隻豬, 幾隻鴨子, 和一對迷你馬.
Besides, she also has two donkeys, one pig, few ducks and a pair of ponies.
她說, "等小羊長大, 和迷你馬住一起."
She said, "Baby goats will live with the ponies when they grow up."
小羊要有新朋友了.
Baby goats are having new friends.
新家.
New home.

我們在清晨發現牠. 單獨的一隻.
We found her before dawn. She was all alone.
牠啄食所有的一切. 定是餓壞了.
She pecked up almost everything. She must be starving.
牠比鵝小, 和家鴨差不多大.
She's much smaller than farmyard goose, just about the same size as Peking duck.
最耀眼的是, 牠翅膀尖端的黑羽,
The most impressive is the black line on the tip of her both wings
恰為牠的雪白畫上強烈對比線條.
which are extremely perfect in contrast to her snow white.
年年雪雁從極北的寒凍來到中加州山谷過冬.
Flocks of snow geese migrate from arctic tundra to the central valley of California every winter.
大概牠暗夜不慎飛越聖他安娜峰, 來到這裡.
I guessed she had flown over Santa Anna Peak by accident in the dark.
Here she was.
天漸漸亮起來.
The sun was rising.
牠去鴨區, 鴨不睬牠.
Ducks ignored her when she was in the duck area.
牠飛去鵝區, 鵝驅趕牠.
She flew to the goose area.
Once in a while, couple of the geese chased her away.
午後再去看牠, 遍尋不著.
I went to see her again in the afternoon. But I coulcn'd find her.
挺想念牠的.
I missed her.
牠來了.
There she was.

柳樹枝堆集成山. 農夫開動機器把柳枝鉸碎.
Willow branches were piled up high as mountains. Nong-Fu shredded the debris.
鉸碎機很吵人, 得使用耳罩才能工作.
Without ear mufflers on, he could hardly take the enormous noise came from the shredder.
機器力量強大. 我總提醒他, 塞樹枝進去切割, 避免手被機器拉進去.
The shredder is very powerful. I always remind him while he puts the debris in, be careful of both hands.
待碎屑乾燥, 我將它們堆放果樹根, 花圃.
I mulched the fruit trees and the flower beds till the shreds became dry.
保護樹根花根, 不受日曬霜凍.
It protects the root of the trees and flowers from heating and freezing.
寄望明年果樹結更多鮮果, 花更豔麗.
I sure do hope there will be much more beautiful fruits and gorgeous flowers next year.

秋陽照熟了青綠的石榴果.
Autumn sun ripened the green pomegranate fruits.
紅紅的石榴果掛樹上很好看.
Red pomegranate fruits hanging on the tree were very delightful.
中國人喜愛石榴多子, 象徵多子多孫多福氣.
Chinese like pomegranates with plenty of seeds which symblizes plenty of offspring plus plenty of good fortune.
孔雀喜愛石榴樹小小的樹陰,
Peacocks simply liked the tiny shade of pomegranate bush.
我一靠近石榴樹, 一隻警覺的孔雀立刻探頭, 四處張望.
Right upon I got little closer to the pomegranate bush, an alert peacock poked his head looking around.
"沒事啦!" 我說.
"Easy!" I said.
農家食譜----石榴生菜沙拉
Farmer's simple food---Pomegranate Salad
材料--生菜, 石榴果. 黃,橘色番茄或甜椒隨意.
Lettce, Pomegranate.
Yellow,orange tomato or sweet peper optional.
做法--石榴果分成數辦, 剝下果粒.
生菜置盤中, 與切片番茄或切絲甜椒略拌.
灑上石榴果粒即成.
Method--Cut pomegranate into several parts.
Separate the seeds.
Mix yellow or orange with green.
Spread pomegranate seeds over all.
紅紅的石榴果.

夜晚降霜了.
It frosted at night.
難怪凍得緊.
No wonder I felt chilly in the air.
窗外一片雪白.
Outside of the window was in white everywhere.
幸運的我們在加州幾乎天天陽光普照.
We are lucky. We have sunshine almost all year round in California.
大地略施淡淡的銀粧, 我歎為奇美.
I am amazed all the time when it is covered with just a slight of silver .
少見多怪罷了!
Anyway, it's rare to me!
我不顧寒霜, 衝出屋外.
I rushed out to the frosty cold.
羊群向我走過來要食物.
Goats came for food.
對不起! 還沒準備呢!
Sorry! That was not ready yet.
池中野鴨是愈冷愈游得起勁兒.
The mallards seemed like the colder it was the better in the pond.
不好, 我的手指凍僵了.
Gosh! My fingers were stiff.
得進屋去了.
I got to go inside.

我們去海邊看海.
We went to the beach
藍藍的天. 藍藍的海.
to see the blue sky and the blue sea.
只有海鳥, 不見一個人影.
There was nobody on the beach but the seabirds.
水鳥逐水而走.
The waders had a good time playing with the water.
鵜鶘飛翔浪頭覓食.
The pelican hovered about for food.
狗嚇走了水鳥.
When the dog came and scared the seabirds away,
我們該回去了.
it's time for us to go home.

清晨, 我替母雞開門.
I opened dog house gate in the morning.
打從開始抱蛋, 我早晚為牠上下門. 沒見牠起身過.
Since the hen started sitting, I never seen her up.
看牠那瘦小的身子, 外加一本正經的模樣, 真擔心牠能忍受多少抱蛋的辛苦?
She's small. She's serious as well.
I worried how hard she could take?
陽光和煦, 我經過狗屋. 瞥見牠居然不在裡面.
The sun was brilliant.
While I walked by the dog house,unbelievably she was not there.
終於, 牠想出來活動一下了.
She decided to go out at last.
原來牠走到農舍前喝水.
I found she was drinking the water in front of the house.
牠低頭好好喝口水, 抬頭換一換氣, 又將頭浸下去.
She gulped with her head down.
After she raised up her head to breathe in deeply,
she dipped it into water right away.
一而再, 再而三. 喝水, 換氣. 牠一定渴極了.
Drinking and breathing, over and over again.
She must be thirsty to death.
之後, 牠快步匆匆回狗屋.
Shortly, she trotted back.
牠換個位置, 繼續抱蛋.
She went on sitting in an opposite position.

下雨了.
It's raining.
暗灰的天空令人不爽,
Gray sky was unpleasant,
乾枯的農地卻亟需雨水灌溉.
but the very dry ground needed rainfall badly.
雨點愈來愈大,
Raindrops were getting heavier,
我們奔回屋裡.
we rushed inside in the rain.
正好小蝸牛出來逛一逛.
It was good time for little snail went out on a trip.
矇矓的聖他安娜峰.

農夫去買飼料. 天啊! 飼料又漲價了.
Nong-Fu went to buy feed. Good Lord! Feed price was up to a new high.
今年飼料價格已漲了好幾次.
It has been raised couple times this year.
飼料場的人說, 玉米都拿去做代用汽油了.
Feed company worker said that most of the corns ended up into alternative fuel.
玉米田裡的玉米被投機者搜購一空.
Speculators searched for the corns all over the world.
動物吃的玉米簡直無處尋覓.
Feed company could hardly find inexpensive corns for feed anywhere.
動物飼料以玉米為主, 添加其他穀類.
Animal feed was based on corns with certain portion of other grains.
市場上, 玉米成了奇貨, 飼料價上揚.
Corns were rare on the feed market. Feed price soared.
目前來講, 玉米製代用汽油, 工場設備花費龐大.
Up to now, the facilities making corn into alternative fuel cost dearly.
在美國適用與否, 更遙遙無期.
Furthermore, nobody knows when it will be available for commercial use in the States.
可以看見的是, 農人成本遽增, 蒙受相當損失.
Farmers already suffered a loss from higher cost to the feed for sure.

當我拿鳳梨芭樂給羊群, 一隻母羊一直在我面前轉, 對我咩咩叫.
While I gave the goats pineapple guavas,
one mama goat kept walking about in front of me and bleated to me.
我喜愛看小羊, 不想多看牠.
I liked to watch the baby goats more than her.
不客氣的對牠說, "走開! 走開!"
So I talked to her unfriendly, "Go away!"
母羊就是不走.
She was not leaving.
我遠遠向小羊平日嬉戲的地方望去. 不好, 出事了.
I looked far away where the baby goats played games all the time.
Something's wrong there.
門倒下來, 一隻小羊沒有躲過厄運.
The gate fell off the fence.
One baby goat was out of luck.
樂極生悲.
Extreme joy, begets sorrow.
失去孩子,母親傷悲.
The mother mourned for her baby deeply.
小羊都在那邊玩.
All the baby goats were playing over there now.
"我的孩子呢?" 母羊萬分憂傷的看著我.
"Where's my baby?" Mama goat gazed at me with terribly sad eyes.
我無法回答, 摘把花給牠.
Without answering, I picked a handful of poppy to her.
"吃了花, 你會好過些." 我說.
"Take some flowers, you'll feel better." I said.
時間可以療慟.
Time can heal her grief.
"我的孩子呢? "
"Where is my baby?"

據說要下雨了. 我們正期盼著雨.
The weatherman said, it's gonna rain. We're expecting.
些許白雲飄散藍天;
Several clouds splashed over the blue sky;
陽光明燦, 山景清爽.
the sun was clear and the mountain was crisp.
雨從何來?
Where's the rain coming from?
山腳大片農地整理妥善. 等待時機適當, 就可播種.
Fields at foothill were ready for planting.
絲蘭花柱高高聳立在秋陽下, 慿添秋的氣息.
The column of yucca towered in the bright sun,
getting a slice touch of autumn.
夕陽映照, 天空更多彩.
After-glow glossed the brilliant sky.
不會有雨的.
I don't think the rain's gonna coming.

等羊吃完柳葉, 我們收集柳枝, 準備用機器鉸碎做堆肥.
After the goats have consumed all the willow leaves, we collected the debrises and shredded it into mulch.
羊群馬上走過來, 個個用柳枝刮頭皮.
A herd of goats right came to the bare branches to scratch their itchy head.
這些羊倒是挺會廢物利用的.
They were pretty good at making the most of it.
想想確是好主意. 牠們頭皮發癢找誰抓?
Actually that's not a bad idea. Otherwise who's gonna scratch for who's itchy head?
收集柳枝. Collected the debrises.

深秋天已涼. 一隻母雞開始抱蛋.
It cooled down a lot in late autumn. One hen started hatching an egg.
牠住進狗屋, 遠梨雞群. 獨自清靜. 幾天未進食.
She sat alone in the dog house from other chickens. She didn't have anything for several days.
曾幾何時, 另一隻母雞也在雞舍就地抱蛋.
Since when, another hen started sitting in chicken coop as well.
我擔心牠們餓著了, 分別送上食物.
I worried they got hungry. I served them food.
住狗屋的, 用狗食盆裝飼料.
For the one in dog house, I left grains in a dog bowl.
牠看見食物好像沒看見什麼, 動也不動一下. 專心認真抱蛋.
She was so dedicated. It looked like she didn't see anything happened.
雞舍抱蛋的母雞看見食物來了, 一個箭步衝向飼料, 搶先進食.
The one in chicken coop dashed toward the food when she saw it and gobbled first.
原來牠肚子下面根本沒蛋.
I found none eggs at all underneath her.
牠在假裝抱蛋.
There she played sitting.
