電線上黑鳥像五線譜的音符一樣, 牢牢吸引住我.
Those black birds perched on power lines just like musical notes on the staff fascinated my soul deeply.
清晨或傍晚, 我朝電線張望.
Morning or evening, I looked over there.
哇! 牠們飛來了, 多美妙的弦律!
Wah! They came. Such a beautiful piece!
噢! 牠們飛走了, 音樂結束了.
O! They left. Music to an end.
我試想用黑鳥音符譜曲.
I tried to compose with black bird notes.

生蛋季節之前, 正是綠頭野鴨覓偶的時候.
Right now, the mallards are pairing before they lay eggs.
塘中處處綠頭野鴨, 看對眼的佳偶似乎並不多.
There are mallards everywhere in the pond. Seemingly it takes long way to get a sweetheart.
你愛我嗎?

夜晚氣溫降至冰點下.
Night temperature has dropped down to below zero.
晨起, 草地一片霜白.
On top of the grass was covered with frost in the morning.
秋陽溫暖, 卻無力融解噴灌區草上冰霜.
Bright autumn sun came to less warm. It's gonna take a good while to get the frosty ice on irrigated pasture away.
幾隻野鴨悠游塘中.
Few mallards swam along the pond,
令我想起年幼時與姊妹們冷天練游泳, 凍得直打哆嗦.
which reminded me when I was teenage going to a cold day swimming practice with my sisters in an unheated outdoor pool. That was so chilly. We shivered all the way through practice.
無盡的回憶...
Lots of memories....
秋陽無力照霜凍.

小羊跟著媽媽學長大.
Baby goat followed after mama goat to learn living.
有時牠乖乖的, 有時牠調皮搗蛋.
He's well behaved. He's mischievous, also.
媽媽拿牠沒辦法.
Mama goat couldn't help it at all.
好孩子. Good kid.

人到某個年紀, 偶爾搖一搖自己也是不錯的.
When one gets to a certain age, it feels cool to rock oneself occasionally.
搖! 搖! 搖! 我似嬰兒沉睡.
Rock! Rock! Rock! I rocked myself to sound asleep as an infant.
禿鷹在高空盤旋. 牠們想些什麼?
Several condors hovered about. Guess what's in their mind?
我醒過來, 坐起身, 享受溫暖的陽光.
I really enjoyed sitting in warm sunshine after a short break.
禿鷹飛離我遠去.
The condors flew far and far away.

十一月廿五日 星期日 陰 柳葉特有的清香頗受羊群喜愛.
Willow leaves are the goats' favorite.
種植羊區的垂柳, 只要羊可以構著, 馬上吃進肚子.
As long as the goats reached it, the weeping willow leaves were cleared up right away.
秋季柳樹剪枝, 農夫乾脆留下剪枝, 給羊吃個夠.
Year end willow trimming, farmer left the debrises for goats to having a great meal.
搆取葉子. Reached out for leaves.

十一月廿四日 星期六 晨霧後晴轉陰
樹葉盡落, 留下光禿的空枝.
Gone all the leaves.
曾經, 綠葉成蔭, 果實纍纍垂滿枝.
Trees were used to be shady and loaded with fruits.

眼前只是空空如也.
Nothing but empty at present.
很驚訝在梨樹上竟然發現一個完整的梨.
Amazingly I found a perfect pear hanging on the tree.
是樹葉嚴密保護, 逃過了鳥雀, 也逃過了我的眼睛.
Heavy leaves must well protected the pear from birds' spoil and my eyes as well.
雀巢一一呈現. 原來樹上還發生許多事, 我們不知情.
See the nests. I wondered how many things had happened in the trees.
鳥棲空枝, 天涼了.
Birds stopped at the naked branches. It was getting colder.

玫瑰花越開越少. 該是剪枝的時候了.
Roses are out of bloom. It is time to prune the roses.
玫瑰剪枝三步驟: 停, 看, 剪.
Rose pruning three steps: stop, observe, then cut.
慢慢來, 欲速則壞事.
Take all the time to decide whichever should go.
剪錯玫瑰枝, 後悔來不及.
It feels bad cutting off the good ones.
僅留四到六枝粗壯的玫瑰枝.
Leave about 4 to 6 strong stems each rose bush.
來年, 玫瑰美豔, 多麼心曠神怡.
Surely that gorgeous roses are refreshing me a lot next year.

多年前, 我寫鳳梨芭樂. 有人當它是鳳梨與芭樂, 兩樣不同的水果.
Years ago, I wrote about pineapple guava. Someone mistook it as two different fruits, pineapple and guava.
鳳梨芭樂外皮確有芭樂果香, 但不是芭樂. 芭樂果肉硬且脆. 就是成熟, 也不甚軟. 成熟的鳳梨芭樂果肉軟甜帶有濃郁鳳梨香, 風味十分特殊.
Indeed, the peel of pineapple guava has guava flavor. The inside of guava is hard and crispy. Even when it gets riped, it won't be very soft. Fully riped pineapple guava is tender with a touch of fragrant sweet of pineapple aroma.
入秋之後, 樹上的鳳梨芭樂一一成熟. 我們不上樹採摘鳳梨芭樂果, 而是等它掉落地, 再從地上撿拾起來.
Pineapple guave riped in fall. We picked up the fruits until they dropped on the ground, instead of climbing up the tree.
收集鳳梨芭樂堆成山, 挑選需要的品質, 就可以出貨. 送到城裡果菜市場販售.
We delivered those selected to the produce market in city.
不合格的留給自己和羊吃. 人一日至少食一籃, 羊則滿滿一桶.
The rejected are for ourselves and goats. One basket for us and one bucket for goats a day.
人快吃膩啦!!!

農家食譜----鳳梨芭樂果醬 Farmer's simple food-----Pineapple guava preserves
材料--熟軟鳳梨芭樂數個, 糖, 清潔果醬瓶備用. Several riped pineapple guavas, sugar, clean jars.
做法--鳳梨芭樂切丁. Put diced pineapple guavas in pot.
置鍋內, 小火煮滾. Bring to the boil with low heat.
加糖. 用湯匙攪動. Add sugar, slowly stir to boil again.
再滾, 盛起裝瓶. Scoop preservs into jar while boiling.
立刻蓋緊瓶蓋. Close the lid right away.
儲藏陰涼處. Keep jars in cool area.

仲秋的清晨, 氣溫降至華氏三十四度.
It's already been mid autumn, early morning temperature dropped down to 34F.
我走去餵鴨.
I went to feed the ducks.
塘上霧露迷濛, 一片白茫茫.
The pond was all covered in mist.
野鴨照舊降落, 俟機搶食.
As usual, several mallards landed on the pond in order to steal duck's feed.

惟一一隻母羊生了孿生雙胞胎. Only one has twin babies. 這是什麼啊? Guess what's this?

圍籬裡面的動物總覺得圍籬外頭的草好吃.
The animals kept inside of the fence always think that the grass outside of the fence tastes better.

It rained all night.
大清早, 我喜見蜂鳥.
Surprisingly, a hummingbird greeted me early in the morning.
牠在枝頭停留許久. She rested on the tip of an apricot branch for long.

核桃樹又高又大, 枝葉茂盛, 下面有鞦韆.
走過核桃樹, 我喜愛多盪幾下鞦韆. 彌補小時搶不到鞦韆的失望.
秋風把核桃樹葉吹落一地. 有些核桃果還掛在樹上, 有些果子也隨風掉落地.
我撿拾核桃果, 剝除青綠外皮, 留下果子.
得空, 將殼敲碎, 取出果肉. 敲得手指出血, 才知市場小小一包核桃碎仁的售價尚稱公道.
用自家核桃碎仁做蛋糕, 可是本農場高檔食品呢!
農家食譜----簡易核桃蛋糕
材料--超市購買調配好的蛋糕粉cake mix一包, 口味隨意. 核桃碎仁或多或少.
做法--按市售蛋糕粉指示攪拌, 除將奶油butter更換為沙拉油.
最後加入核桃碎仁, 稍拌, 倒入烤盤.
送入烤箱, 按時取出.

葡萄採收已經結束. 葡萄枝葉亂長, 滿藤架. 該修枝了.
葡萄修枝在狹窄的葡萄架與葡萄藤隙縫中間鑽上鑽下, 向來由我負責修剪.
清早, 我開始剪枝. 剪著剪著, 找到了未採收的舊葡萄. 老天賜我點心也. 嘴裡閒著, 摘下來吃看看! 好像葡萄乾.
不多久, 小蜂鳥停在葡萄藤上, 陪伴我工作. 可惜牠只肯陪我三秒鐘.
羊區的羊群也一直咩咩叫不停. 教我修完枝, 別忘了拿剪下的葡萄葉給牠們吃.
修枝完畢, 葡萄架看似剛理過髮, 清爽透天.
我拿葡萄葉給羊時, 發現母羊剛生兩隻小羊.
葡萄採收已經結束. 葡萄枝葉亂長, 滿藤架. 該修枝了. (Before)

十一月三日 星期六 晴 晚餐時, 農夫提醒我, 日光節約時間今晚結束, 記得睡前把鐘調慢一小時. 入秋後, 白晝已經越來越短. 六點多鐘, 很快天黑. 不似夏日, 天黑的晚. 太陽下山後, 我們確實還可以在農地上做許多活.
天將黑時, 不遠處傳來歡慶音樂. 隆隆鼓聲, 震動心弦, 響透山谷. 大概是老墨家在音響店工作的兒子, 試用某種新音響設備, 順便打發漫長的今夜. 電視上正放映難得一見的老片, 亂世佳人Gone With The Wind. 片長四小時, 演到半夜十一點鐘. 想必是為晚上多出一小時而播. 亂世佳人, 我最最喜歡的影片. 從小到老, 看過十幾二十幾遍, 不清楚了. 看到郝思嘉生女, 我支撐不住, 終究沒看完全片.
耳邊猷隱約傳來絲絲鼓樂節拍聲, 老墨他們還沒睡呢!

我本來並不十分喜歡白的花朵.
許是年歲日增, 越來越能欣賞白花素潔美麗, 純樸無瑕.

城裡來的朋友告訴我們, 他請人捉地鼠, 一次一百五十元, 只保證五天. 簡直是欺負城裡人.
鄉下人人知道, 地鼠在地底下地洞通道跑來跑去. 這隻捉走, 另外一隻會再來. 一隻接一隻, 永無止境.
有些動物城裡人喜歡, 有些動物鄉下人喜歡. 只有地鼠, 城裡人, 鄉下人, 都恨之入骨.
地鼠在地下, 挖地道, 打地洞. 鄉下人恨牠吃蔬菜果樹的根. 城裡人恨牠毀壞美麗的綠草地.
於是採取水淹, 土埋, 煙燻, 隔離, 等等措施. 勞民傷財, 結果不甚理想.
地鼠小, 門牙特大, 向外暴, 適宜啃嚙. 專吃玉米根, 番茄根, 玫瑰根, 果樹根. 我們天天和地鼠鬥法. 與地鼠誓不兩立.
地鼠聰明, 通道不走直線, 彎彎曲曲. 地鼠洞口一定有兩條通路. 一條可通. 一條不通, 騙人用的.
農夫累積十幾年捕地鼠經驗, 用捕鼠器最好. 看見新開口的地鼠洞, 就在洞口兩邊各埋一個捕鼠器. 管它通路不通路.
雖不敢說手到擒來, 一日一鼠, 少不了.
據說, 大約平均一畝地一隻地鼠活動. 農夫曾在同一畝地上設五,六個陷阱, 一天捉到六隻地鼠.
秋天地鼠肥大, 地鼠洞也寬大.
